# Apply a Discount After Checkout on Shopify Orders

Apply a discount. A forgotten discount, claimed without a support ticket.

A customer pays full price and then remembers the discount. This tool lets them claim one from a list you control, without a ticket, and shows what comes back before they confirm.

Where your customer sees it: the Thank you page and the Order status page, in the Tacey editing tools block. On every plan; plans differ by order volume only.

## What your customer does

1. Your customer opens "Make changes to your order" and chooses Apply a discount.
2. They pick from the discounts you have allowed. They do not type a code.
3. They see the refund amount before confirming.
4. They confirm, the discount is applied to the order, and the difference is owed back to them.

## What you control

- **Discounts a customer may claim**: Pick from your store's active discounts. Shopify has no way to apply a discount code to an order that is already placed, so these become the offers a customer may claim rather than codes they type.
- **Once per order**: Stop a customer applying more than one discount to the same order.
- **How the customer gets the discount back**: You choose how the refund goes back. Every refund is recorded on the Order changes page, whether or not it succeeded.

## What it refuses

- Orders whose edit window has closed. You choose how long customers can edit their own order after checkout.
- Orders paid with Shop Pay Installments, orders from before 2019, local delivery orders, orders created by another app, and orders still waiting for payment. Tacey never edits the items on those.
- Cancelled orders, and orders that were merged into another order.
- Any discount you have not allowed. With none allowed, nothing is accepted.
- A second discount on the same order, while "Once per order" is on.

## Money

Money goes back to the customer. The customer already paid full price, so claiming a discount after checkout means the difference is owed back to them. For example, a 15% discount on a $100 order means $15 is owed.

## FAQ

### Does the customer type a discount code?

No. Shopify cannot redeem a code on an order that is already placed. You pick which of your active discounts a customer may claim, and they choose from that list.

### Can a customer stack discounts?

Not while "Once per order" is on, which stops a customer applying more than one discount to the same order.

### Where does the refund go?

The way you set it in the tool. Each refund is recorded on the Order changes page, whether or not it succeeded.

### Does my customer see this automatically?

Not until you add Tacey's block to the two pages. In Shopify's checkout and customer accounts editor, choose Add block, then Tacey editing tools, and save, on both the Thank you page and the Order status page. Turning a tool on in Tacey does not place the block for you.

### Is this tool on every plan?

Yes. Plans differ by how many orders you send through Tacey each month, never by which tools you get.
