# Change Quantity or Remove Items After Checkout

Change quantity or remove items. Quantity, size and colour, before it ships.

Most order changes are small: one fewer, a different size, an item they no longer want. This one tool covers lowering a quantity, removing an item, raising a quantity and swapping a variant of the same product, each with its own switch.

Where your customer sees it: the Thank you page and the Order status page, in the Tacey editing tools block. On every plan; plans differ by order volume only.

## What your customer does

1. Your customer opens "Make changes to your order" and chooses Change quantity or remove items. Only items that have not shipped can change.
2. They lower or raise a quantity, remove an item, or swap to another size or colour of the same product, depending on which of those you have switched on.
3. Before anything moves they see what happens to the money: an amount to pay, an amount coming back, or no change.
4. They confirm, and the order in Shopify is changed. Removing an item either takes effect at once or becomes a request you approve first, depending on your setting.

## What you control

- **Let customers reduce or remove items**: On by default. Turns off just this mode and leaves the rest on.
- **Let customers increase quantity**: Off by default. Also needs "Allow charging for added items", because raising a quantity can raise what is owed. You also set the most a customer can add in one go.
- **Let customers swap size or color**: Off by default. A customer swaps an item for a different size or colour of the same product, never a different product.
- **Let customers swap to an option that costs a different amount**: When on, a customer can swap to an option with a different price. If it costs more they pay the difference through Shopify's own payment page. If it costs less the difference comes back.
- **Allow charging for added items**: Off by default. No money is collected without this turned on.
- **Keep at least this many items**: Customers cannot empty the order. Set the smallest number of items an order may be left with; the lowest value is 1. To cancel, a customer uses Cancel order.
- **When a shopper removes an item**: Remove it right away, or Ask me first. In Ask me first, nothing is removed or refunded until you approve it in Tacey or in Shopify.
- **Where the refund goes, restock, and shipping**: Where money goes back, whether the removed item returns to your stock, and whether shipping is refunded on a partial reduction (off by default).
- **Approve or decline requests automatically**: Both are off by default. Tacey can approve a request that passes every rule a customer's own removal passes, or decline one that can no longer be cancelled, with a note in your words.
- **Only if it is in stock**: Applies your own Shopify inventory settings, so a product you allow to oversell is always offered and a tracked one you do not is refused past its available quantity.

## What it refuses

- Orders whose edit window has closed. You choose how long customers can edit their own order after checkout.
- Items that have already shipped. Only what is still unfulfilled can change.
- Orders paid with Shop Pay Installments, orders from before 2019, local delivery orders, orders created by another app, and orders still waiting for payment. Tacey never edits the items on those.
- Cancelled orders, and orders that were merged into another order.
- Leaving the order with fewer items than your minimum.
- A different product, or a new product. Use Replace product or Add a product to your order for those.

## Money

Money can go either way, and nothing moves without the customer's explicit confirmation. A reduction sends money back, as a refund that waits for your approval on the order page or goes out automatically if you turned on Refund customers automatically in Global settings. Charging for more needs "Allow charging for added items", which is off by default; the extra is paid through Shopify's own payment page and the order is held until then.

## FAQ

### Which of these are on when I switch the tool on?

Lowering a quantity and removing an item are on. Raising a quantity and swapping a size or colour are off until you switch them on, and charging for added items stays off until you allow it.

### Can a customer remove everything and end up with an empty order?

No. There is a minimum number of items an order may be left with, and the lowest you can set is 1. A customer who wants everything gone uses Cancel order.

### Can I approve removals before they happen?

Yes. Choose Ask me first, and a customer's removal becomes a request. Nothing is removed or refunded until you approve it.

### Can this change an item to a different product?

No. It changes a quantity, or a size or colour of the same product. A different product is Replace product.

### Does my customer see this automatically?

Not until you add Tacey's block to the two pages. In Shopify's checkout and customer accounts editor, choose Add block, then Tacey editing tools, and save, on both the Thank you page and the Order status page. Turning a tool on in Tacey does not place the block for you.

### Is this tool on every plan?

Yes. Plans differ by how many orders you send through Tacey each month, never by which tools you get.
