# Order Notes and Gift Messages After Checkout

Order notes & gift messages. A note or a gift message, added to the order.

Customers remember the gift message after they pay. This tool lets them add a note for you, a message for the person who receives the parcel, or both, from the thank you or order status page.

Where your customer sees it: the Thank you page and the Order status page, in the Tacey editing tools block. On every plan; plans differ by order volume only.

## What your customer does

1. Your customer opens "Make changes to your order" and chooses Order notes & gift messages.
2. They type a note for you, a gift message, or both. A message longer than your limit is refused with a request to shorten it, not cut off.
3. They save. A note is appended to the order's note, never replacing text that is already there. A gift message is saved on the order.

## What you control

- **Let customers add an order note**: A note for you, visible on the order in your Shopify admin.
- **Let customers add a gift message**: A message for whoever receives the parcel. Orders with one get the tacey-gift-message tag, so you can spot them on your orders list.
- **Maximum length**: How many characters a customer can write. The default is 500.
- **Gift message box label and prompt**: Your own heading and an optional line under the box, such as "We'll print this on a card inside the parcel."
- **Order fields customers can see or edit**: Pick fields your store already keeps on orders, such as a delivery date or a monogram. Customers only see a field you switch on, and can only change it if you allow editing.

## What it refuses

- Orders whose edit window has closed. You choose how long customers can edit their own order after checkout.
- Cancelled orders, and orders that were merged into another order.
- A note or message longer than your maximum length.

## Money

No money moves.

## FAQ

### Does a customer's note overwrite my own notes on the order?

No. The customer's text is appended to the order's note. Text that is already there stays.

### Does this work on orders the other tools refuse?

Largely, yes. A note is not a change to what was bought, so the order-type refusals that block item changes do not block it. It is still limited to your edit window, and a cancelled or merged order refuses it.

### How do I spot gift messages?

Orders with a gift message get the tacey-gift-message tag in Shopify. The message itself is on the order under its metafields.

### Does my customer see this automatically?

Not until you add Tacey's block to the two pages. In Shopify's checkout and customer accounts editor, choose Add block, then Tacey editing tools, and save, on both the Thank you page and the Order status page. Turning a tool on in Tacey does not place the block for you.

### Is this tool on every plan?

Yes. Plans differ by how many orders you send through Tacey each month, never by which tools you get.
