# Order Editing on the Shopify Thank You Page

Customers fix a shipping address, swap a size, change a quantity, add an item, or cancel, on the thank you page Shopify already sent them (Shopify calls it the order status page). No ticket, no portal to learn, no waiting for a support inbox.

## One order goes through three things

1. **Validate**, every address, on every order, checked before anything ships. If the check fails or times out, the order still goes through. A check never costs a sale.
2. **Let them fix it**, the customer gets a link to their own order and fixes the address, changes a quantity, or swaps a size, right there.
3. **Prove the money moved**, every edit writes down what changed, what it cost, and who asked for it, matched to what Shopify actually processed.

## Six reasons a whole order can be untouchable

Merchants set the rules, but Shopify's own platform limits make some orders uneditable no matter which app is used:

1. Paid with Shop Pay Installments. The customer is on a payment plan with a third party, and neither Shopify nor Tacey can safely change the order underneath that arrangement.
2. Created by another app. Some other app placed this order rather than the store's normal checkout.
3. A local delivery order. It follows a different fulfillment path than the one supported for editing.
4. Payment is still pending. There is no settled amount yet to edit against.
5. Placed in a different currency than the store's own.
6. Placed before 2019. Very old orders sit outside what Shopify's own order-editing tools can reliably act on.

One more, separate from the six: an item that has already shipped cannot be changed either. Only what has not gone out yet is editable.

## Merchant controls

- An edit window as short as 15 minutes, or open until fulfillment.
- Any single action (address, quantity, variant, adding an item, discount codes, cancellation) switched on or off store-wide.
- Exclude specific orders using tags already in use (e.g. `fraud-review`, `manual-hold`).
- Stock checked against the location actually fulfilling the order.

## The warehouse waits for the window to close

There is no way to stop a warehouse system from picking an order the instant it is ready, so the order is simply not marked ready until the edit window has closed. No integration for a fulfillment team to install.

## Every edit writes a receipt

Shopify's own order timeline can say something changed. It cannot say whether money moved or whether the warehouse ever saw it. Every edit on Tacey records what changed, what it cost, who asked for it, and whether the warehouse confirmed it before the order shipped. All of that is on every plan, no upgrade required. Internally this is called the reconciliation ledger.

## No money moves without a yes

An order edited upward is not automatically charged the difference by Shopify. An order edited downward is not automatically refunded. Every charge and every refund needs a real confirmation, from the merchant or the customer, before it happens. No setting turns that off, on any plan.

## FAQ

### Does this slow down or block my checkout?

No. Address validation runs after the order is placed, never during checkout, and it never holds up a sale.

### What happens if the address-checking service is down?

The order goes through anyway. It is marked as not checked, plainly. Nothing is ever shown as verified that was not actually checked.

### Where exactly can my customer edit an order?

On the thank you page Shopify already sends them (Shopify calls it the order status page), and in their Shopify customer account. Nowhere else.

### Can a customer change something after it has shipped?

No. Editing closes the moment an order is fulfilled, or earlier if a shorter window is set. Only line items that have not shipped yet are ever editable.

### Does money move on its own?

No. Nothing is ever charged or refunded without an explicit confirmation, and no setting turns that off, on any plan.

### What if I do not want customers editing their orders at all?

Turn any action off individually, or exclude specific orders using a tag already in use.

### How does the fulfillment hold work with my 3PL?

The warehouse system is not touched. The order is simply not marked ready to pick until the edit window closes.
