Shopify Search Quality Tester
Most merchants only hear about bad search when customers complain. Paste your store + a customer query, get an AI-judged relevance score per result + a fix list. Public storefront only, no auth required.
What this tool does
Audit your store's search the way an AI shopping agent would
Most merchants only hear about bad search when customers complain. By then, hundreds of shoppers have already typed something into your search bar, gotten irrelevant results, and bounced. This tool lets you proactively test any customer query against your live store. We hit your store's public search endpoint, then an AI judge scores each result 1-10 for how relevant it is to the query - exactly the way an AI shopping agent (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) would evaluate your search before deciding to recommend you.
How to use it
Three minutes from query to verdict
- 1
Paste your Shopify storefront URL. Custom domain or .myshopify.com both work.
- 2
Type a customer search query - something a real shopper might type. Be specific (e.g. 'waterproof boots size 10' beats 'boots').
- 3
Click Run search quality test. The tool calls your store's search, then sends the results to an AI judge that scores each one for relevance.
- 4
Read the overall Quality Score / 100 - it's position-weighted (top results count more than bottom results).
- 5
Review the per-result breakdown. Weak matches at the top = expand product titles, add tags, or set up a search redirect. Strong matches at the bottom = your search ranking needs tuning.
Merchant tips
How to use this in your weekly merchandising review
Test the queries your shoppers actually use. Pull your top 10 internal search terms from Shopify Analytics > Reports > Search and run each one through this tool.
Pay attention to the rationale, not just the score. The AI judge tells you WHY a result was rated low ('result has no overlap with query terms', 'product type mismatches query intent') - that's the actionable bit.
If your top result is consistently a weak match, the fix is usually one of three things: missing keyword in product title, broken search synonym, or out-of-stock item bubbling up because Shopify treats stock=0 as 'still available' in suggest.
Search quality has a direct, measurable revenue impact. According to Forrester, on-site search drives 30-40% of e-commerce revenue, and shoppers who use search convert at 2-3x the rate of browsers. Bad search = leaving money on the table.
Run this test on competitors too. If their search returns better results for the same query, that's a competitive intelligence signal worth acting on.
When to use this
When to reach for this
Weekly merchandising review
Run your top 5 search queries every Monday. Spot regressions before customer service tickets stack up.
After uploading new products
Test the queries that should now find your new SKUs. If they don't, fix tags / titles before the launch.
When chargebacks spike
Customers buying the wrong product because search misled them is a known chargeback driver. Test the queries customers complained about.
What you get out
Quality Score / 100 + per-result rationale + fix list
Position-weighted Quality Score (0-100), a 2-3 sentence merchant-friendly summary, a list of specific issues flagged ('result #1 has zero query-term overlap'), a list of actionable recommendations ('add keyword X to product Y title'), and a per-result breakdown with the AI judge's relevance score (1-10) and a one-line rationale per product. 5 tests per IP per day, AI inference cost <$0.01 per run.
