I spent seven years working in customer service and operations for Shopify merchants shipping at volume across multiple countries. Live commerce drops. High-velocity brands processing thousands of orders a week. Wholesale operations across multiple warehouses and 3PLs.
The operational problems I kept seeing were not new or exotic. They were the same problems, every store, every volume level. Orders with bad addresses moving through fulfillment without anyone catching them. Duplicate orders shipping because the queue moved too fast. Discount codes being abused with no visibility. Customers asking where their order was with no one watching the tracking data.
Every one of these problems had the same root cause: nothing intelligent was operating at the order layer. Shopify received the order and passed it downstream. What happened between placement and fulfillment was a gap that merchants filled with manual work, spreadsheets, and support tickets.
