Free Shipping Threshold Optimizer

Plug in your AOV, margin, and shipping cost. We'll show you the threshold sweet spot - high enough to lift basket size, low enough that customers actually clear it.

Conservative threshold (1.3× AOV)$65.00
Recommended threshold (1.5× AOV)$75.00
Aggressive threshold (1.75× AOV)$88.00
Projected AOV after rollout$56.00
Break-even on shipping at recommendedYes - safe

The 1.5× AOV rule is the sweet spot for most apparel/DTC stores - roughly 30% of orders cross the threshold and each crossing lifts AOV ~12%. Tighter (1.3×) maximizes adoption rate but caps the lift. Looser (1.75×) maximizes margin per crossed cart but converts fewer.

What this tool does

Pick the right free shipping threshold for your AOV distribution

Free shipping is the single biggest AOV lever most stores have, and most stores set the threshold by gut feel. This calculator takes your average order value, current shipping cost per order, and AOV distribution shape, and recommends a threshold that lifts AOV without crushing margin. Most stores are 10-20% too low or 20-30% too high - both extremes leave money on the table.

How to use it

Four inputs, one recommendation

  1. 1

Enter your current AOV (Shopify Analytics > Overview).

  2. 2

Enter your average shipping cost per order (the cost YOU pay carriers, not what you charge customers).

  3. 3

Enter your current free-shipping threshold if you have one. Use 0 to model 'no current threshold'.

  4. 4

Pick your AOV distribution shape: tight (most orders cluster near AOV), spread (orders span widely), or unknown.

Merchant tips

Free shipping math beyond the threshold

  • The right threshold is typically 1.3-1.5x your current AOV. Set it too close to AOV and you don't lift orders. Set it too far above AOV and most customers don't qualify.

  • Cart-page progress bars ('add $12 more for free shipping') typically lift AOV 5-10% on top of the threshold itself. Bare threshold without messaging captures only ~30% of the lift.

  • Bundles and threshold-baited add-on products are the highest-leverage way to push customers across the threshold without dropping margin.

  • If your shipping cost is highly variable (heavy items, international), a single threshold underprices it. Consider a 2-tier approach: free standard above $X, free expedited above $Y.

When to use this

When to revisit your threshold

After an AOV change

Bundles, price changes, or product mix shifts move AOV. Re-run the calculator to keep the threshold matched.

Carrier rate increases

Annual carrier rate hikes (typical 5-8%) shift the math. Don't absorb the hit silently.

New market entry

Entering a new country with different shipping economics needs its own threshold - blanket thresholds usually price one market wrong.

What you get out

Recommended threshold + projected AOV lift

A single recommended threshold dollar value, plus the projected AOV lift in percent and dollars. The recommendation accounts for your shipping cost per order so you don't accidentally trigger a profit-negative free-shipping policy.
